Another fine example of non genuine Land Rover parts being a false investment, exhaust gas leakage and extra time and money spend by replacing and fixing the problem. 200Tdi Defender Land Rover, the new pattern part ‘waffle’ gasket (top 2nd picture) did start to leak within days after fitting it to the engine. For some reason this part is just not good enough. As you can see on the detailed image below the No.4 exhaust port is leaking, see the black carbon traces. Taking out the old (but new) gasket and replacing it with a new genuine one (grey gasket 2nd picture) will cost you a 1-2 hours work. Remove the exhaust down pipe, manifolds, turbo fee pipe etc. etc. to get access. On this engine it ended up to be a quick job due to the fact all nuts and bolts have been dismantled recently + replaced with new ones + fitted with copper slip.
The cylinder head on this particular engine is a Turner Engineering gasflowed cylinder head. Check out their website for more details on gasflowed cylinder head and reconditioned Land Rover engine.
