Last summer the 200Tdi Land Rover (Mushroom type) snorkel has been replaced by a plastic Safari Snorkel made in Australia. Compared to the old mushroom design the biggest differences Safari Snorkel vs Steel Mushroom one are plastic in stead of steal and forward facing scoop type compared to mushroom sucking air from below. As the Safari Snorkel has been designed in Australia focussing on dessert and dust the question can be asked how will it cope with rain and snow? Safari Snorkel does claim the design will drain water but what about snow? As you can see at the picture (front side) snow has already entered the snorkel. A basic review based on test driving.
So far we’ve been driving the vehicle during some moderate snowy weather conditions (secondary roads and highway) and to our surprise the air filter turned out to be dry on inspection. Not sure if we have been lucky yes or no but light snow does apparently not affect the air intake and/or will turn the paper air filter into a wet sponge. During rainy days the air filter did not get wet either. So based on some very basic test drives and our user experience we believe the Safari Snorkel is capable of doing a proper job…
If anyone has tested the Safari Snorkel during heavy rain and heavy snow please share your opinion & feedback by posting a comment.
